Possible to import models from Maya into Houdini for FX?

Just started a Houdini class 3 weeks ago. Our main project is to create a lightning bolt effect with smoke etc. The bolt shoots out from a character's hands and hits a tower that we created. Only downside is the procedural modeling in Houdini. Creating a tower in Maya with some basic detail takes 1 hour (if that). In Houdini, I have to do like a 10 hour tutorial of nodes and some C++ to make a tower (whyyyyyyy?!)
So my main question is this: Can I export geometry from Maya into Houdini? If so, how do I do it? Any specific steps I need to do in a certain order? If the tower can be imported into Houdini, can it be used for effects for lightning, smoke, shatter, dust, etc? Basically, if it can be imported into Houdini, does Houdini understand and then allow me to treat as a Houdini file?
Thank you!
