Hi all,
I am still learning Maya 2016 and am trying to rig a model. I am having problems with the joints having too much affect on the model parts and have sections of parts move that I don't want to move. I have attached two screen shots (before and after) showing the problem. I have tried skin weighting but am having no luck.
Is there some setting or step that I am missing? I also have a screen shot of the settings when binding the skin. I am not sure how to fix this.
Thanks!
Hi @Anonymous
It's a bit hard to tell from those screenshots how you painted the weights. If part of the mesh is still being pulled you'll want to make sure you completely covered that area when painting so that it won't be affected.
Can you possibly post a screenshot of the actual skin weights you painted on the mesh?

Hi sean.heasley,
So these shots are without weighting. I am attaching two more shots with the paint weighting tool, and the 'arm' joint I am trying to move has an effect on the bar that I do not want to move. I tried to remove the influence from the bar, but it doesn't work. There must be something I am missing. I have looked at tutorials, and I 'understand' what paint weighting does, but I have no idea how to make it do what I am looking for.
The projection on the bar that is shaded white should not move when I move the 'arm'. I am also attaching the .mb file so you can see what I have done thus far.
Any help would be much appreciated!
Hi @Anonymous
Thanks for attaching the file and screenshots!
I think part of the issue may be do to the size of the model/joints. One of the joints is overlapping on the part of the model you don't want to move which can cause it to ignore the paint weights and still move.
A quick test you could try is scaling things up and then making multiple joints so instead of the two that you have you could use 3 or 4, then paint and then try to move it.
Let me know how that goes for you!
