I'm just getting started with Maya, coming over from Max so pardon my terminology 😄
I'm working my way through the included tutorials and am working in the section on shaders. Also working with a "Max and Maya side-by-side" book in parallel so I can cross-reference the instructions.
So my problem is there are no materials appearing in my hypershade window. I've started by creating materials on the object and by creating them in the hypershade window but all I get is a black empty space. I create, I get an additional material number (like Lambert02) yet nothing appears. I've tried selecting in the window randomly and there doesn't seem to be anything there.
I've gone through the various display menus, tried changing swatch sizes and types, started over...
I've read through the information in Help and everything seems to indicate that the materials just appear, that I don't have to do anything special to get them in the window. Or am I missing something?
Can't work on materials if I don't have any!
Anyway, Maya 2010, on an iMac with OS 10.5.8
Edit: FYI I don't seem to have all the tabs across the top of the window that I should. It only shows "materials", no textures, utilities, lights, cameras, etc.
