Menu boxes are not working

Whenever I try and open the menus for various things in Maya by clicking the box next to them, instead of popping the menu open, it just doesn't do anything...am I looking in the wrong spot? Is the menu docked somewhere in newer versions of Maya? Clicking the tool by itself works, but then I don't get the options.

What version of Maya are you working on and is it up to date?

A quick fix could be to try deleting your settings/preferences.

Also what menu box are you trying to open?
