Below are the steps that I take that leads to the issue. If you have any other questions about the steps, I take feel free to let me know.
Steps 1: Opening Maya and setting project folder.
Step 2: Opening the scene file.
Open the maya file that is within the project folder and set workspace to Xgen.
Step 3: Convert to Interactive Groom
Select description. Then click on generate. In the dropdown menu then select "Convert to interactive groom".
At step 3 the crash occurs. And Maya closes off
