Maya - "Keep faces together" wont turn off

the title says it all. im trying to extrude a bunch of faces at the same time so they all shrink in (and later sink down) making little cells of sorts (this is a cieling lamp thing). I click to turn "keep faces together off" and it just wont work. i've had this problem on previous projects too, and i've reset extrusion settings many times. any ideas??

Is the pivot set to faces?
Its the little circle icon on the top right of the gizmo.
