Maya Freezes When Saving (2018)

I have been using Maya 2018 for about a month now and it's been working just fine. Out of nowhere, the program starts freezing whenever I hit save or save as. I've reinstalled the program and tried saving in other formats. The only thing that works is when I make a new user account on my Mac and just open to software in that user instead. The issue completely disappears. However, it randomly pops up on those user accounts a day later and I have to do it again.

This has nothing to do with my OS, my applications, or anything as I know its happening on another persons computer as well and they've had to switch over to 2017 to work properly.

Any help in fixing this would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Hi @ktheorin1

Yeah this is definitely unusual.

Out of curiosity, could you try downloading and running Maya 2017?

That comes with Arnold as well and I'd like to see if the issue happens on that as well.

Let me know if anything changes!

Hmmm, you mentioned one of your peers having the issue as well and that his software was similar to yours.

Could you possibly compare your set up with a classmates laptop that isn't having the issue?

Usually a clean uninstall/reinstall of Maya or deleting your settings/preferences will solve this type of issue but the fact that it is still occurring is really unusual.

Since the does not seem to be reproduce able, it's difficult for me to provide more assistance. Is it possible you could talk to your school/faculty about looking at you laptop?

I mean I've done clean installs of both Arnold and Maya, and only Arnold provides that temporary fix. I'm not sure what else to do here.

Hi @ktheorin1

I understand and it is unusual and extremely frustrating.

That said, did you get a chance to talk to faculty at your school about it and/or your fellow classmates that aren't having the issue?

At this point it seems to be an issue with your laptop itself.

Let me know when you get a chance to speak with them and see if there are any noticeable differences!

We talked to our faculty pretty early on about the issue and got no real answer about what the problem might be. Other students haven't had the issue on their laptops because they don't employ the Arnold renderer. I would ordinarily agree that it was my laptop or something installed on it if it wasn't for my classmates laptop having the same issue. She has little to any of the same programs installed, but does use Arnold like I do.

Hi @ktheorin1

If it's possible, you may want to see if you can either 1. Use a new/different Macbook 2. Check to make sure there are no issues with the hardware inside the Macbook.

I understand it may not be a hardware issue since your classmate is having the same problem, that said it's worth checking out at this point.

Also it's a slim chance since an uninstall/reinstall did not work, but you could try deleting your settings/preferences. This will completely reset Maya to default and may help resolve whatever issue Arnold is having.

Let me know if this works for you!

Hi @ktheorin1

I'm sure you've been busy with school but I just wanted to check in to see if you were still having this issue? Did you get a chance to try the steps I provided in my previous post?

I've deleted the preference for Maya and I'm decently certain it can't be an issue with the laptop simply due to the fact that my classmate has a newer laptop with different softwares installed. Unfortunately, I'm not using Maya as frequently this week, so I'll have to get back about how all this works out. Currently, Arnold works fine.

Hi @ktheorin1

Hmmm ok I'm gonna check in with you later on this week and see if the issue is still occurring. I'm also going to go ahead and log this with our dev team and see if it is a known issue and/or if there is a workaround for it.

Hi @ktheorin1

I know you said you weren't using Maya too much this week but I just wanted to check in to see if this issue is still occurring. Is Arnold still causing Maya to freeze?

Hi, I have a similar problem. I have an educational license for both Maya and Maya LT 2018. Both freeze and quit after giving the message seen on the screenshot (Student Version File).

I deleted the preferences as described earlier in this topic, but that didn't help.

I also took a screenshot of my Terminal window.

And here's a video of what's happening (the very same thing happens when I try to run Maya 2018).

I have a suspicion that the problem occurs when I do anything in the Channel Box. Maya seems to think that I'm trying to save and the crashes.

And with that, I also found the solution here.

Hi @sean.heasley,

Not sure if it matters anymore, but I found another solution. It seems more like a bug that needs to be fixed. I'm running 2018.2

I was having the same problem. Every time I saved an empty scene, Maya would fatal error. When I found this thread and read that it was Arnold related, I did some troubleshooting. I found that it ALWAYS happened when I opened a scene with the arnold render view docked and minimized. It may have to do with this error that would show up when I open a scene that has the Arnold render viewer open:

// Error: line 1: Object's name 'ArnoldRenderView' is not unique. //

Problem was fixed if I:

A) Just opened a scene with arnold render view NOT DOCKED AND MINIMIZED.

B) If the scene did open with the arnold render view docked AND minimized, I'd right click and close the arnold render view tab. At this point I could relaunch the arnold render viewer and save, or not relaunch it, it'll still save fine.

Regards,
