Maya freezes my PC (next level freezing)

Hi there. Im having a major issue with maya which whenever I decide to use the edge loop tool or anything related to it on a model im doing, for some annoying reason, Maya suddenly freezes and this isnt a normal unresponsiveness, this is like just straight up frozen, and then about 1 second after, whatever else I have on my other monitors (say for example youtube or a video im watching) will freeze straight after. And then i have about 3 more seconds before my PC fully freezes to where the mouse cursor stops responding as well, and Im forced to force shutdown from the mains.

Now at first I thought this was a general windows issue but after doing alot of intensive work in other programs such as substance painter or other intensive programs, everything seemed to work fine but whenever I seem to use the edge loop tool on a new model im starting, the issue of freezing becomes present.

I assumed this was a GPU related issue but after updating that and my maya service packs, both 2016 and 2017 freeze my PC for no apparant reason. Could someone please suggest something as this is the most annoying thing ever? Thanks.

That does sound like an annoying issue. Could you resetting your Maya prefs? It that doesn't work try this:

1. Delete any GPU driver folder at C:\
2. Delete (or rename) the prefs folder at %homepath%\Documents\maya\<version> (do this for both Maya versions)
3. Download and run DDU to completely remove whichever drivers you have installed.
4. Redownload and install your GPU drivers.
5. Make sure your drivers are set to maximum performance
6. Launch Maya and test.

CPU = AMD A10 5800K
GPU = AMD R9 270X 2GB
RAM = 1800MHz DDR3 16GB
MOBO = GIGABYTE F2A58M-HD2
OS = Windows 8.1

Its quite an old system since i brought it about 5 years ago but it still does the job. Keep in mind that this issue was random, as far as Im aware I havent installed anything else (program wise) ever since it started

Hi!

You may try a complete uninstall and re-install of the graphic card driver, also make sure that the ATI driver is the only graphic drivers installed on your system (don't mix ATI with NVIDIA).

Maybe a simple update or older version of the driver would also help, but i guess you checked that.

You also could try different Viewport Settings in Maya (for example DirectX) and and Legacy Viewports.

"Im aware I havent installed anything else"

Every change of a system can cause problems even uninstalling something.

Hmm Ill try working with the legacy viewports and see if that makes a difference.
