Maya crashes whenever I click render settings!

Maya crashes whenever I click render settings!  I can't even change my settings without it crashing.  At the bottom left it says writing what I assume is a temporary file, but it gets to 94% and then crashes saying it is a software error.  I can preview renders no problem, but trying to batch edit and can't even get to the point of making my settings.

Any help appreciated!

You might want to try resetting the maya preferences to see if you're preferences have become corrupt. Close down Maya, then depending on your OS, look for a folder called "prefs" in one of these locations:

  • Windows: <drive>:\Documents\maya\<version>\
  • Mac OS X: /Users/<username>/Library/Preferences/Autodesk/maya/<version>/
  • Linux: /home/<username>/maya/<version>/

once you find it, rename it to something else (like prefsBackup or something). Then open Maya. This will create a brand new prefs folder, with all brand preferences, and might fix the issue.

If it doesn't, you can always delete the newly created "prefs" folder, and rename your old folder back to prefs.

let me know if you need more clarification on any of that!

hmm. That is odd. Here's a few things to try:

1. create a brand new scene with nothing in it, and see if you can access the render settings. If you can, then there's something up with your file. If not, then it's something with maya.

2. if it's still crashing and therefore something up with maya, try accessing the render settings in different ways, in case it's a UI issue. Here's a few different ways to get there:

    a. change menu set to rendering (F6 hotkey, or change it to rendering in dropdown in the top left), and go to render>render settings...

    b. open up a render view (like you said still worked) and in the render view window go to Options>Render setings...

3. Another thing to possibly try is changing the output renderer to another one. If you're still in rendering menu set you should be able to swap that under Render>Render using..., or if you have a render window open you can select options>render using...   .  Maybe try maya hardware, or maya software.

If that fixes it, then you know there's something up with Arnold or Turtle or Mental Ray or whatever.

I hope that helps you narrow it down! If none of that works, it may need a reinstall, or someone with more Maya knowledge than I have haha. Best of luck!

Thanks for the suggestions.  I tried everything and still crashes anytime I click render settings...  Except when I used other forms of rendering, so I isolated the issue to be with Arnold.  Not sure what to try next though, did a reinstall and same issue persisting.

I have the same problem, and i also think the responsible is Arnold. Is it possible there are some compatibility issues due to updates or... i don't know, routine management that messed up a bit?

It's strange though, because i haven't allowed any update in Maya, neither in Arnold.

I open Maya and do nothing, so blank scene. Create a cube and go to Attribute Editor to view the material. Crashes.

Blank scene again, clic on render settings. Crashes.

I tried to delete the prefs, and even tried to uninstall and install again, no luck.

If someone can give help it would be very appreciated.

I am currently using Maya 2018.4 with Arnold (MtoA 3.0.1.1 and Arnold Core 5.1.1.1)
