Maya colouring and shading of objects not working

My Maya 2024 student version refuses to add colouring and shading of materials. I tried the normal way of clicking on the object, assigning new material, clicking on the standard surface and then changing the base colour, but nothing is changing. I have tried different ways and tricks from other scholars but nothing is working, kindly help good people!

What's the shading mode for the viewport? Smooth Shade All?
