Maya breaking with the selection tool

So, everything works fine for 5 or 10 minutes. And at some point I try to do a Selection, of an object/vertex/bone/orwhatever. And suddenly Maya breaks, stops working, my whole computer stops, I wait for 1 minutes and the computer works again. The only problem is that Maya's viewport doesn't work anymore, I can save the scene using Ctrl+S. And I have to start again....

I have Maya 2018, everything started with the 2018.3, I tried downgrading to 2018.2 but the same happens. Any ideas?

Hi @Anonymous

Thanks for posting! Can you answer a couple questions for me to help get to the root of the problem? 🙂

  1. Have you tried Reseting your Maya Preferences?
    • Its a common misconception that these are reset after updating or installing, but this is not the case 🙂
  2. Are you on Windows or a Mac?
  3. Does your operating system meet our System Requirements?
  4. What is your Graphics Card? Is it on our list of Certified Hardware?
  5. Are all of your drivers up to date?
  6. Are you using a Wacom Tablet, Cintiq 3D or Magic Mouse?

Thanks for your time! I look forward to hearing from you!

Hi Jordan,

1. I deleted the Maya Preferences already, the problem still persist.

2. I am on Windows 10

3. It does meets your System Requirements.

4. The graphics card is not on the list thought, I have an Intel Iris Graphics 550. (I have a Wacom Mobile Studio Pro 13")

5. All my drivers are up to date.

6. It is a Wacom, it breaks using the pen or the mouse

Thanks for your time

you say a wacom? I had to either turn off touch at the wacom tablet/cintiq or disable the multi-touch gestures in maya to not wind up with an app-crash when exiting maya.
The only quirk I had within the application was that after using the touch features the mouse-wheel stopped working (depending on which end of the desk I am I either reach to the tablet or the mouse...) but can't remember seeing those freezes.. still... worth a try...

Make also sure you update the display-drivers.. and maybe try one of the legacy viewports.
