Maya binary file parse error: : (12) bad root block

Hello.

I am seeking some help in trying to resolve an issue with some files that will not open.
Initially, these files were created in 3DS Max. and then converted to Maya 2016 files using the send to Maya feature in Max.  At the time everything worked fine with no issues, but now 4 years later I am needing to use these files again to make some revisions and I am no longer able to open any of those old files.

I receive an error message "Maya binary file parse error: : (12) bad root block" and when I search online for a solution, none of the recommendations seem to work or are possible.  It was recommended that I try and open the files on the original computer in the exact file directory that they were created and then save new versions, but the files were created on a computer not my own and I no longer have contact with the originator.

I initially thought that perhaps the files were corrupted, (which is still possible) it just seems strange that all the Maya and Max files are presenting with the same issue. The remainder of the files on this drive works just fine as well which seems even more peculiar.  I have tried to open the files in Maya 2016 all the way to Maya 2020 with no success either. I have tried opening and importing the files with no success. I also tried opening the Max files in max 2021 and have no luck there either.  The files are a .mb format for Maya and .max for 3DS Max.

Any help with this issue would be appreciated.

Thank you to those that reach out with possible solutions.
