Maya 8.5 to Maya 2018?

Hi everyone 😄

I used Maya back in 2005 and since then I haven't touched it much until now. 12 years later, I'm back into 3D as I missed it and looking forward to getting back. I used to model on Maya 8.5 and I dug up my old models to print some using a 3D printer. Sadly when I open them in 2018, they are turning out to be blank. 😞 They were modelled on  Maya 8.5.

Anyone ever had this problem?

Thanks so mucho.

Hi @Anonymous and welcome to the community!

Your best bet would be to try exporting the models as an FBX or OBJ from Maya 8.5 (if you still have it) and then open it in 2018.

If all you have is the scene file then you may not be able to open it due to compatibility issues with the 10 years of changes that have occurred with Maya since 8.5

Thanks a lot for checking-in. Do you happen to have a 8.5 trial maybe from the archives? Just enough to try maybe.

try this: open maya 2018 then drag the 8.5 file in the viewport. Let me know if it works 🙂

...do not press that key!

first is your file a maya .mb or .ma ?

Cause if it's an .ma you should be able to extract the data.
