Maya 2024 crashes constantly

Maya 2024 is definitely not ready for production. Crashes constantly on the Mac. If I click on the subsurface color a couple times, down it goes. Twice it has crashed while I was away from the computer. It will just crash on its own, not being used. Annoyingly, it asks to fill out the bug report twice for every crash.

How can something this unstable get out the door? For the thousands of dollars a year we pay for this software, this is embarrassingly substandard.

i can also confirm that Maya 2024.1 on Mac M2 crashes constantly for no reason, like clicking on a viewport will go poof, absolutely unusable, reverted to 2022.5 and not a single crash since then, very upsetting.

Same here. Windows 10.  I was just on a pretty long troubleshooting message thread with autodesk support who suggested I upgrade to 2024, which I did with the thought that it may solve some f the other issues. Finding constant crashing with mundane operations.  Created a dup from a simple geo object, extruded a few faces and attempted to combine the 2 geo.  Crashed.  It's also lagging horribly with every operation.

Hi,

If you are encountering frequent crashes I would recommend staying with Maya 2023 and waiting for a 2024 update release.

Also confirming that 2024 crashes after the smallest operation.  Set a keyframe - crash, move an object, crash.  It's been impossible to use for animation.  I've tried it on my maxed out M2 at work and PC at home.  Unusable, currently downgraded to be able to work.

Same. I run an iMac late 2020 with Monterey and 2023 and 2024 both crash on start up half the time, and the other half crash sometime soon after that. If I can't get a new build to actually function in the near future Blender is starting to look like a viable option.

Yes, that's exactly what I'm doing.

2024 seems to have some "pretty" upgrades, but the constant lag and crash is not working for me.  Plus I HATE the new boolean.  It seems that they're trying to emulate zbrush's live boolean, but it's not working and terrible.

I'm back on 2023.

This time it's related to rigging. I'm attempting to animate a rig and it's bad. Every single move of a control causes a crash. After trying to isolate the problem, it turns out it's still related to the viewport (does not matter if you go with the default or legacy display setting). It cannot process any type of complex deformation without crashing.

2023 crashes all the time too.

Do you have a time machine to go back to a build that worked?

Yup, it's called Maya 2023.3

Far more stable.

Same with windows, crash modeling, rigging, and now animating looks the worse scenario for crashing, just keeps crashing with me, it looks like autodesk quit on maya, it's sad.

PC user her, Win 10. Can confirm that Maya 2024 is waaaay more unstable than the previous version, means it crashes 3-4 times on a working day. I use Maya almost only for modeling/texturing. When UVing, it crashes with tools, that previously worked just without any flaws.

The crashes aren't even reproducable. When restarting Maya, doing the same action, it works. Till it crashes next time.

I work currently in the same scene like i did in the old Maya version, where it crashed not once over days.

PC Specs: AMD Threadripper 1950x, 32 Gig RAM, GeForce 4070Ti

I just did update to Maya 2024.2 and it is unusable to  me. Crashes all the time even with simple actions. Win11 pro, AMD 7950, Nvidia4090. Tried viewport 2.0 changes. Does not help. Downgrading... 😕

When crashing did you get the crash report prompt.  If so can you share the report number with us?  Please Direct message.

Cheers!

Nelson

Hi Nelson.

It does not give any report. It just closes the maya to desktop instantly. I don't have much time now. But after I am done with the project I will try to install the new version again and hopefully test a bit more.

I might have rushed the review because, although significantly less often, the scene hangs on Maya in older versions (2024.1, 2023.3) as well. Also difference is that in older versions maya freezes. In the latest one it closes instantly.

I am using shrink wraps for "morphing" between different geometry objects and feels like maya does not like that in the scene I am working.

do you have that rigging scene that crashes everytime you move a controller? Could you zip it up and post it here or DM me it?

Things seems to be working much better now since the latest update. My only problems appear to be squarely on Xgen now. I've posted the symptoms here

https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/maya-shading-lighting-and/found-bug-in-rendering-of-hair-clumps-clump...

I didn't mention Xgen in general seems to crash 2024 a lot more than 2023 does. Otherwise, the issues in this thread appear to be resolved for the most part at least for me.

Agreed. There appears to be some degree of improvement with the viewport vertex issue addressed but for me there is still a little amount of crashing while triggering deformers and animating. Might have something to do with the fact that my rig is not as optimized as it should be.  I'm in the process of optimizing my rig  and will see if I still experience crashes after.

As far as crashing during modeling, I can't contribute to that because I have not done any Maya modeling in months.

As far as Xgen is concerned, I have an Xgen file that eventually started taking 10 minutes to open in Maya 2022.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2tl8ThXPi-Q&ab_channel=KoteyAnnan

it was an Iberian Lynx with about 10 descriptions. That 10 minute file opening wait time made me give up on Xgen. I'm going try it in 2024 to see if that issue still exists and if there are new issues as you described.

UPDATE: 7/31/2024
I figured out why some of my XGEN files are taking 10 minutes to load. it's because I'm using curves to create and control my IGS guides. This was something I preferred because I felt more comfortable using maya curves to determine the direction of my fur (I was not really liking how the IGS guides and/or groom were responding to the grooming brushes). molding curve cv points was just easier for me.
For all my XGEN files that don't rely on curves, there is no 10 minute wait time. So it's looking like XGEN does not like having to create the relationship between maya curves and IGS guides at load time. Anyways, this means I'm discarding the use of curves in my future projects until the issue is resolved. Other things I might need to check is if the curves have history or if all I need to do is disconnect the curves from the guides once the guides are doing what they are supposed to. I will update any further findings in this thread or a new one related to XGEN.
