Maya 2020 - loosing shaders when making an instance of a referenced file by "duplicate special"

Hola, I'm working on a city layout which requires using references and duplicating them as instances to keep the file size as low as possible. However when re-opening the scene all the instances looses shaders. Is there a way around this please? Cant figure it out. I didn't change any group names, simply duplicated special as "instance" group under "parent".
