Maya 2019 Playback Issues in Empty Scene

To preface, this experiment was performed in an empty scene, so has nothing to do with scene contents, but obviously plagues any scene I open due it to being a global issue.

When I set my playback settings to 'Play every frame' and 'Free', Maya has no problem reaching over 400fps.

When set to '30 fps x 1', the playback sits at 21.6 fps. Whichever frame rate option I choose, it is always about a third slower than it should be, which makes timing for animation an impossibility without constant playblasts.

Cached playback does not solve the issue, neither does using an option other than 'Play every frame'.

I am running Maya 2019 on a machine with an RX 5700XT GPU and Ryzen 5 3600 CPU with 16GB RAM.

Any solutions or ideas would be greatly appreciated as I have tried everything I can think of.

Strange behaviour you have there. A couple of thoughts:

  1. Do you have Free-sync enabled? Try disabling it
  2. Disable SMT for your CPU. Must be done in BIOS

Hi, thanks for the response.

Unfortunately, disabling both of those features made no change to the playback speed.

Hi @Anonymous,

A few other things that might be worth a shot:

  1. Disable cached playback.
  2. Change your evaluation mode to DG instead of parallel.
  3. Try with the legacy viewport: How to restore the Legacy Viewport in Maya | Maya 2018 | Autodesk Knowledge Network
  4. Try switching to (or from) Direct X 11 in the Viewport 2.0 settings window.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I've now tried every suggestion individually and every combination, but still the maximum frame rate I get is 21.6. I've also tried resetting preferences to no avail. I am hesitant to reinstall due to the changes in student licensing (being a graduate I can no longer register for student licenses).

I can use the real-time setting and have skipped frames, but obviously this is not ideal considering my PC is clearly capable of playing back every frame.

Hi,

I have exactly the same issue, 21.6 fps in an empty viewport and real time gives much higher speeds. AMD CPU and nvidia GPU. Did you ever end up solving this?

Cheers!

Downloaded 2020.3 now and it seems to work there as far as I can tell. Tried 30 and 60 and I get both now in real-time.
