This is an application specific questions/work flow issue. It has nothing to do with installing or licensing your product. Your question needs to be posted in the Maya forum. I will have the moderator relocate it to better suit your needs.

Hi!
1. Clean up your mesh if there are any problems.
2. Try switching Subdivision Method to "Maya Catmull-Clark" instead of "OpenSubdiv ..."
3. Make sure you use a proper 3D graphic card for Maya.
4. Update graphic card driver (maybe just re-install after an OS update).
5. Try different Viewport modes (in Preferences).
Seem problem in this day, i have this problem since to the upgrade windows in mars 2018,
In maya 2017 student version
Hi,
I have revolve this problem,
The error come to the card in processor,
Deactivate that in the task manager and just keep your graphic card ! 😉
Yes, even i got this problem till now... But, i just solved it by myself... Do one thing.. Whenever you want to apply "Smooth Mesh" to any object.....
Just select the object and go to "Attribute Editor" > object/poly Shape > Smooth Mesh .
In that you will find Subdivision method > by default it is set to "Use Global" just uncheck it, when you unchecked it, it shows/select "Maya Catmull_clark" by default as well and now apply the Smooth Mesh or press '3' ..
BINGO
