Maya 2018 F hotkey can't see any part of scene

When I press the "F" key to focus on an object I cant see anything in the scene any more. My far clipping plane has enough zeros in it, I have been experimenting with that. I have uninstalled the program and reinstalled and still no dice, I have resorted to having to create a new perspective camera each time. any help is appreciated thanks

Hi @Anonymous

While you uninstalled and reinstalled, its possible your settings are still the same so you may want to try deleting your settings/preferences.

Also, does this happen on a specific scene or even on a fresh scene of Maya with a basic cube?

Let me know if anything changes!

Hi Sean,

I should have mentioned that before I uninstalled it I changed the "prefs" folder to "prefsold" and when it regenerated it was still the same.

Hi @Anonymous

Hmm ok. When you press the F key, does the camera move and just not to the object or does it not move at all?

Could you possible post a video of the issue happening?

If you need a video capturing program, Screencast is a great option that we use here at Autodesk

Hi Sean,

When I press the F key, the scene is just completely grey I can't even see the grid so I don't actually know if it is moving at all.

Hi @Anonymous

Can you add a few zeroes to your near clip plane as well to see if that changes anything?

This is usually an issue with preferences but you could also try changing your rendering engine to see if that makes any noticeable changes.

Hi Sean,

I'm afraid that didn't make any difference.

Hi @Anonymous

Hmm ok.

Can you select the object and go to View->Look at Selection then try pressing the F key again and let me know if that works for you!

The solution to fix this almost every time it has happened to me, while keeping your preferences is to change the "Fit Factor" back to 1 under the Cameras section of the preferences.  Somehow it gets set to 0.01 so when you hit F, it zooms way out.  That's it, done. No need to remove the preferences and waste 20 minutes of your time setting everything back up.

This has been asked so many times. It literally took me 5 minutes of comparing the preferences file to a fresh one to find the problem, so maybe it should be fixed.
