Have you tried resetting your preferences folder?

https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/maya/troubleshooting/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticles/Reset-May...

Solution:

Refresh the preferences by using the following steps:

Mac:

  1. In the Finder, click the Go menu and then click "Go to folder..."
  2. Type /Users/USERNAME/Library/Preferences/Autodesk/maya/VERSION/
  3. Click "Go"
  4. Find the prefs folder and rename it to prefsOld
  5. Restart Maya and if prompted to select the option to create default preferences.

Windows:

  1. Rename the prefs folder found in the following location to something like prefsOld:
    • Windows 64-bit: C:\Users\USERNAME\My Documents\maya\VERSION\
    • Windows 32-bit: C:\Users\USERNAME\My Documents\maya\VERSION\
  2. Restart Maya.
  3. If prompted to, choose the option to Create Default Preferences.

EDIT: Faline beat me to it 🙂 But I also don't think a complete reset of preferences is necessary, consider the shelves are separated from other user preferences that may be set.

Hi Sky,

There are two ways to fix this that I know of:

  1. Delete the shelves from the shelf editor and reload them back in
  2. Just delete the shelves directory in your prefs folder and relaunch Maya

If you have any custom shelves, the first method can be more ideal, but takes more work. The second method is faster, but requires you back up any shelves that you have made yourself. So copy and paste before hand.

Inside your Maya preferences folder, there will be a directory called 'shelves'. If you delete that directory, the next time you launch Maya it will be regenerated, and all of the defaults returned. If you have custom shelves, just copy them back in after 😉

The location of this directory is:

  1. If you're on Windows, navigate to C:\Users\<YourAccount>\Documents\maya\2017\prefs

  2. If you're on macOS, you'll find the directory in you Preferences directory in Library. So open Finder and in the Apple Bar, select Go > (Hold Alt) Library. In your Library, go to Preferences/Autodesk/maya/2017/prefs
  3. If you're on Linux (lucky you), go to ~/maya/2017/prefs

the only problem is each time i delete my prefs i have to replace all my custom shelves manually, my friend have maya 2017 sp5 and they are no problems with this update, the last maya revision that is very stable without any prefs issue was maya 2014 sp3.
