Maya 2017 Mental Ray - Rendering and Animation Help

Hey everyone I have a couple of questions.

I am pretty new to 3D modeling, however, I am picking it up pretty fast especially by doing tutorials on YouTube and taking a 3D modeling class in college. However I'm involved in making a documentary and wish to make a quick, simple introduction to the documentary. I want to render an animation with the title (just a few letters). Lighting (light-linking) and movement will be my main focus. Maybe if I can play a little bit with texture and color that would be cool, too. Though I have a deadline I feel it is feasible for me to accomplish.

With all that said, I am working in Maya 2017 because my class is and that is what the school is settling on for now though we have access to 2018. So since it is what the school is downloading, that is what I downloaded on my home desktop.

I heard that Mental Ray is the best rendering plugin for video/film, however, I heard it is not available.

Is there anything I can do to create this in Maya 2017? Any tips as I tackle this project?
