Maya 2017 hangs when second window is opened on second monitor

Anonymous

Hi community,

I'm still having this problem. I'm running Windows 10 and a GTX 1080 card.

If I open my hypershade, my UV editor, even my Arnold render window on my main screen it will open.

When I move that window to my second monitor close it. Then re-open it again Maya will fail to load that window and just sit there and do nothing. I can bring up task manager to close Maya and it closes with ease so it doesn't feel like a real crash. It just feels like the window is calling for something (maybe OpenGL related?), waiting, and the computer isn't giving it to the window.

This has been happening for months and I've been diligent in making sure that when I open those windows that I ether use them on my primary screen or make sure to close them on my primary screen. Now I've come to find out that My Arnold render window was on my second screen it it will not open.

I believe it's related to this issue https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/maya/troubleshooting/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticles/Maya-han...

But that fix does not work any more.

Again any type of refresh of the window on the second monitor will make Maya pause. Even if I have the UV editor on the second monitor and open up any of the drop downs in the UV Toolkit.

Please, please I'm begging for help! If anyone has ANY insight I'm all ears.

Thank you,

Craig

Hi Sean,

Thanks for responding back. I haven't had a chance to try it. I did see that I had the latest driver but it is different then the one you mentioned. I downloaded the driver you suggested so this weekend I'll uninstall the newer driver and re-install the older driver.

Hi @Anonymous!

Just wanted to check in to see if you got a chance to try the steps with the specific driver I provided. Have you had a chance to try those steps? Did they help solve your issue at all?

Happy holidays everyone,

I've also been enduring the same issue for several months. If any part of Maya is left open on my second monitor when the app is closed, that window will hang the launching of a new session. It's the only program in my suite of software that's doing this, so I'm curious if anyone has discovered a remedy yet.

Aside from a different Cintiq (27QHD), the only real diff in my system is the GPU: Titan X (Pascal) | Driver version: 23.21.13.8813

Here's some of the typicals:

Windows 10 Pro 64 bit

Intel i7-6950x @3.00GHz

128GB RAM

I'll be happy to provide any other info, so please let me know the what-what and I'll be happy to oblige.

Cheers,

~Chaz

Hi @Cybergolem

There was a recent driver update for Titan gpus and I believe it is version 388.59.

When you get a chance, can you please up date to it and see if that helps resolve your issue?

Thanks for the suggestion Sean, but it didn't fix the problem.

I tried a couple of different test-launch scenarios. The first was keeping the primary window on the main monitor and the hypershade on the secondary and the hypershade window wouldn't populate with any UI elements. The second was the primary window alone on the secondary window, where it also hung on launch. Most of the UI loads, but hangs before the grid appears.

Any other ideas?

Cheers,

~Chaz

Hmm this is unusual.

I have a triple monitor set up and have never noticed this issue with Maya.

Its possible that it could be an issue with the cintiq and other monitors. Could you possible test this without the Cintiq or is the Cintiq your only other monitor?

Also, you could try updating to Update 5 of 2017 and see if that helps!

You can find the download for Update 5 here!

Let me know if anything changes!

Hey Sorry I haven't had a chance to try the older driver. Holidays started ramping up and I've just been so busy.

I will chime in and say I tried this on another monitor, as opposed to a Cintiq and still had this problem.

I wouldn't mind trying out 5 but I did note that it also happens with Maya 2016 and Substance Painter.

Thanks,

Craig

Update -  I tried the 382.33 driver but it doesn't seem to work. Maybe we're barking up the wrong tree? When I uninstalled all Nvidia products off my machine I decided to try Maya without any drivers and I still got the problem. Maybe it's a CPU or Windows problem?

Sorry I'm not able to come back with better news.

The hunt continues.

Thanks for the update guys. Due to the holidays, I haven't had the opp to dig up an another monitor, nor able to try out Substance Painter to begin testing different software conditions/combos to see what patterns emerge. Anyway, will do so ASAP and post the results.

I'm with you Craig, Maya could be the victim of another software's update (namely Windows). This wasn't happening earlier this year, so my guess is this is definitely software related.

In the interim, if anyone else is suffering the same issue, here's the work around I've developed:

  1. Win10 isn't locked (if it is, your issue is slightly different—worse actually—than mine and the following is mute). Anyway, launch the
    1. Task Manager>
    2. Maya>
    3. End Task.
  2. Right click on the Desktop>
    1. Display Settings
    2. Scroll to Multiple Displays
    3. Change this from Extend these displays
    4. To Show only on 1 (or whatever monitor is your primary)
    5. Select Keep changes
    6. Don't close this window since you're going to revert to the previous setting after this next step.
  3. Launch Maya. This will reset the windows to the one display and unlock/avoid whatever was causing it to hang from before.
  4. Revert your display back to Extend these displays
  5. Return to making your magic.

It's a bummer to use work-arounds, but at least with this method, nuking your prefs isn't required and with a little practice, you can relaunch Maya before the timer hits zero when changing the display setting... I've made a game of it 😛

Cheers,

~Chaz

Hi @Cybergolem

Thanks for posting that in depth workaround!

Like @Anonymous said, it's definitely possible a Windows Update could be causing this issue. They recently had the Fall Creators Update and while I'm not personally experiencing any issues with it it is possible that could cause the issue.

Generally if a Windows Update causes Maya problems the best step is to perform a clean uninstall/reinstall of Maya.

However, if you have done that then rolling back the update could possible help.

Steps to rollback an update can be found here!

Please let me know if anything changes!

Sorry Sean, I haven't yet. The holiday spirit has its merciless claws stuck in me and I can't free myself at the moment. I'll definitely give it whirl once the beast has retreated to the horrific depths from whence it came.

"Happy Holidays!" (It told me to say that 🙂

Hello all!

I have also been having this problem for a very long time, even with Maya 2017 and possibly dating back to when I ran 2016. Though it's DEFINITELY not just a Maya problem, as the issue occurs with many other programs, such as substance, Unity and even some games like RuneScape.

I also have a GTX 1080, and I have only ever noticed it since I've built my new PC with this graphics card.

I do now run a triple monitor set-up one is a Samsung UH750 28" 4k and the others being two BenQ (Not the same) standard 1080p. The problem was occurring when I was running dual BenQ's, though they are not the same monitors one is a BenQ EW2430 and the other is an xl2411t.

What is rather frustrating is it's being happening for a very long time, so there has been numerous Windows Updates (Windows 10) along with various driver updates, and none have ever fixed the problem, same with Nvidia driver updates.

Is there a way to find which is the latest compatible driver for Maya on the website at all?

Thanks

Mike.

Update:

Just completely uninstalled and deleted every file to do with autodesk software, done a completely fresh install of Maya 2018, and updated to the latest version of the software.

GeForce driver is at 388.71.

Problem is still occuring.

Edit: P.S I am using the student version of Maya.

To my fellow sufferers,

I haven't had the time to dig up extra equipment for a thorough test yet, but thought to check in to see how things are going.

Anyhow, my second monitor is a Cintiq, so I'm wondering what you're using for your's?

Happy holidays.

I'm using the following set up:

Samsung UH750 28" 4k

BenQ EW2430

BenQ xl2411t

The problem occurs with the triple monitor set up and also with just the two BenQ's.
