I've been starting to make my way through various YT tutorial series. For example: AutoDesk Maya 2016 Tutorials by Todd Palamar.
I've noticed a few ways in which my User Interface (UI) differed from his and in poking around, I was not able to resolve and get my UI to look identical to his:
(1) The Layout he is using seems to be have the Channel box / Layer Editor in some sort of "docked" or "embed" configuration to the right of his main panel as shown in the attaached screen cap of one of his videos:
Whereas mine looks like this:
(2) When he opens up his hypergraph hierarchy window
Whereas mine:
Completely blank
I'm guessing there are two possible explanations for the differences I'm seeing:
A. Student version just doesn't have all this functionality? or
B. I've got some default settings ticked somewhere that I should change?
Appreciate if anyone can clarify and--if (B) is the explanation--offer any suggested search terms that can put me on the path to learning how to troubleshoot these kinds of issues.
A related question: Given I have a student license which is now more than a year old (I believe it has at least a 6 months if not a year of valid duration before it expires) and is of a version that is two versions "old," is it an option to "update" my student license to the latest version and thus avail myself of more up-to-date versions of the app.
As a side note: Maya is very cool. I'm glad I decided to tackle learning graphics production and start incorporating it into my auto-didactic learning routines. I've still a long way to go with C++ learning (nearing 2d vectors but still not quite there yet!), but I think that alternating between art learning and programming learning will actually be quite salutary at this stage.
