Maya 2015 Selection

Hi, Maya 2015 keeps moving objects once I click on it, instead of just selecting

How can you disable that functionality and revert back to the old selection style?

Cheers

Yeah, I noticed that too and I think it's annoying. When you select a mesh while the translate, rotate or scale tool is still active the mesh inmediatly reacts to the tool, resulting in sometimes unnoticed and unwanted translations/rotations/scaling.

I'm sure there is an option to disable this feature but I haven't found it yet. The workaround is to select the selection tool first and than select the mesh, but that's not a very effecient workflow and I often forget to do so.

thank you for your reply Zoeloedoe, it’s annoying indeed ( no offense to artists whos enjoying it ), I’m digging in tools options but haven’t found anything yet, not even in maya settings ... unless i am missing a tick box or something ?

I noticed that the problem does not occur when using the tools from the new modelling toolkit instead of the traditional ones on the left hand side of the screen (translate/rotate/scale). It seems actually a pretty powerfull kit at first glance. I haven't really looked into this feature much yet, but I guess I will now.

Off course it will move if you have the "Move" tool active!

Try pressing "Q" to enter "Select" mode before you select new components / objects instead, and nothing moves or changes in any way...

You have to deactivate the active tool before continuing to select new stuff.

I don't think you quite understand the problem. It's somewhat hard to explain. I used to work with Maya 2012 and when I was working on a polygon mesh and, for example, had the translate tool active while in vertices display I first could select any number of vertices (with the tool active) and then had to click on the tool center or on one of the arrows in order to translate the selection. Then, if I wanted to de- or increase the selection I could do that while still  in the translate tool. No need to activate the selection tool change the selecting and return to the translate tool.

Now in Maya 2015 when I am in the same situation I can only select multiple vertices when I start the selection from outside the mesh. When I start inside the mesh only the single vertice closest to the cursor (the one that lights up in red because of the new selecting preview) is selected and the translate tool is active right away as if I clicked on the center square of the tool at the same time. Now wherever I click within the mesh the same happens, one vertice is selected and starts to move in all axis right away.

I think this might be a hardware problem, graphic card related probably. I tried Nurbs too (I usually don't use them) and noticed that then the problem does not occur. I can select the control vertexes while in translate or scale or rotate mode, use the tool and then change the selection without deactivting the tool the way I am used to.  However when there happens to be another Nurbs object behind the one I'm working on it seems to get selection priority and I can't select the CV's on the object I was working on, pretty weird.

Like I said, it might have to do with my new hardware. I work on windows 8.1 and have a Nvidia Geforce GTX970, not a Quadro.

i second that Zoeloedoe ...

generalcody no you dont have to hit W then Q or E  then Q to go through your geo(s) , thats not how it used to work in the past .. i dont think you get it.

when i have alot of objects in the scene and when i move one of them, if i am gonna DESELECT an object or click anywhere in the viewport it wont deactivate ( MOVE or Rotate or Scale ), it  will be still activated once you select the next geo ( i didnt have to hit Q to switch to selection mode in the past ) which sometimes accidently can cause moving an obj in tiny value without noticing.

hope this is clear now  .. not sure if there is an option or something is enabled or disabled in 2015 .. as mentioned before .. it gotta be something related to the modeling toolkit.

It seems like I gave myself an idea in my last reply. In the selection preferences (under window tab: settings/preferences -preferences-selection)I unchecked the 'preselection highlight' box and that seemed to do at least part of the trick. I now could select vertices, polygons while in any tool without immediatly start moving things around, for faces however things still remained the same strange as it may seem. Encouraged by this I also unchecked 'Click drag select' and suddenly everything seems to work like it used to. I even checked the 'preselection highlight' back on and everything is still fine Smiley Happy. I hope that this will do the trick for you too.

For anyone who came across this looking for a solution in Maya 2020: Windows > Settings/Preferences > Preferences > Selection > uncheck "click drag select" and that should do it
