imageplane with alpha and dof

I am wondering if anyone else is running into this poblem:

Maya 2018, I setup a simple scene:

1.

- several primitives

- turn on Depth of Field in my perspective

- low fstop like 2.5

- adjust the focus distance

--> result in the viewport is as expected, objects get blurred according to their distance towards camera

2.

- same scene, add an imageplane to my camera, image has an alphachannel, black and white areas

--> result: objects behind the imageplane are blurred no matter what value I use for my focus distance

changing the VP2 options --> performance --> transparency Algo doesn´t help.

Any suggestions?

Hi!

Here it works.

Please add more details, like used Viewport modes / Render engine setting and your GPU.

Also please add a scene-file + texture.

setup a fresh scene for better understanding.

- used viewport2, all transparency algos

- tested DirectX 11, openGL - legacy, openGL - legacy (compatibility),  openGL - core profile (strict),

- no occlusion, no antialias

imageplane in front of camera remains sharp, no blur to nothing

turning imageplane off in viewport, evereything´s fine

Hi!

You are right.

In my first test my image plane had a too high value for depth and was behind the objects.

This Depth of Field effect is not a "real" 3D effect.

If you use any transparent object, a polygon object or an image plane the Depth value of the object in front will be chosen for blur calculation. Could this be handled different, sure, but a more exact display would have a significant impact on render time and FPS for Viewport/Hardware Rendering.

Hi!

Thanks for the info. It works correct in Maya 2016.5 and Maya 2017.

So for some reason they changed the extra handling of the image plane in Maya 2018.

As it worked in previous releases as expected, i would consider this as a bug.

Please report this problem (bug?) to Autodesk.

I cant find a "speak back" section under help.

So where can I report a bug to Auodesk?

Hi!

Should look like this (first in sub menu would be Report a Problem...):

https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/maya-forum/mash-utilities-menu-gt-connect-nparticles-to-mash-suggesti...

Maybe a reset of preferences is needed.
