How to make weapon enchant, using image sequences?

Hello Everyone!

I have been tryin to make weapon enchants for my game for quite some time now.. but its really hard to dust up some of these old techniques used.

Currently I use image sequences of fire in this example.. I'm trying to make the weapon pulse with fire but I'm struggling to make it look right... what techniques did they use in old games to make such effect using image sequences?

I have attached reference videos of what it currently looks like... i would optimally want it to make it look like it emits particles of fire or something that make it seem more dense.

Hopefully there's some old fellas on this forum to shed light on the old methods of animating with image sequences as I'm very fascinated on the topic but can find very little..

Thanks in advance 🙂

This could be a single image with animatied UVs.

Or a sprite done in an other 2D Sofware like After Effects.

Isent animated UVs more heavy to run, than a image sequence?
I feel like they serve the same purpose.. i mean what can you do with animated UVs thats not possible with an image sequence..

I will look more into sprites, dont know a whole lot about that..
