How to avoid selecting vertices on the backside of my object?

I just recently started using Maya and i wondered if there is a way to disable selecting vertices trough objects? Its hindering my work so much that i often select vertices on the backside of the object im modelling by accident. Sorry if this question doesnt belong here, i couldnt find a solution with googl ;/

HI Kasper,

Double click on the arrow icon (upper left corner of your screen) and when the tool settings open, under Common Selection Options check Camera based selection.
