How do create a material override that shows in the Beauty Render?

So I have a render layer that has a collection and a material override.

In that material override I have an aiAO shader plugged in.

When I crank the intensity of the AO nothing changes in the Beauty Render.

Is it not possible to create material overrides using render layers?

The ultimate goal is to have materials on assets, then add effects like sand, dirt, snow etc... during render time using AO and curvature nodes as drivers.  So I wont have to composite everything in another package like after effects.

I can create the blends within the material creation but ideally I would like to set it up a global control for overriding everything not per material basis.

Imagine having a stack of 10 boxes each with separate material.

I would like to have 1 dirt material I can use to blend that in the AO during render time.

Is it possible?

Thanks

P.S
I am using Maya 2019

Are you following a different tutorial? If so, can you post the link here and I would be happy to look into it 🙂
