How can I delete a material from an object?

 Hi. I'm a beginner in Maya.

I have some object that has too many materials (ex. "lambert1", "lambert2"...). I want to eliminate "lambert2" and keep "lambert1". How can I do?
I tried to use "node editor," but I do not have the input / output nodes. I do not understand...argh!

I hope someone can help me.

Assuming you want to use lambert1 for the entire object...

1) Select the object

2) Right click and select "Assign Existing Material" and choose "lambert1"

3) Open Hypershade

4) Select the materials you want to delete and hit the delete key on your keyboard. The materials should be located in the Materials tab of the Hypershade browser.

4a) Alternatively, you can get rid of all unused materials by selecting  Edit > Delete Unused Nodes from Hypershade.

Why I was trying to delete the "lambert1" it shows:
// Error: line 1: Non-deletable node 'lambert1' cannot be deleted. //
Or you cant delate the default material.
