Help >> obj comes in as partial triangles, can't find node editor either

Just started using Maya 2018 school version, a friend made a character in zbrush, retopologized it, sent it to Maya 2015 or 2016 (not sure) and created a basic scene (.mb) with a 3 point light set up and a ground plane/background plane. It opens in Maya for me half normal and the body of the character is all triangles. I do not see where the node editor is to select for converting to triangles when I highlight those faces... was it moved or is hiding in v2018? What else could be the prob? Never had this problem, I just animate already set up scenes that have no kinks/issues so this is new to me to problem solve. Lightwave I could have figured it out no problem, Maya not so much. I am having him now export just the character as .obj by selecting export as polygons not quads to see how that shows up
