Heavy scene rendering.

I have a scene with lot of polygon face (about 10,000,000). I am having problem when batch render it all together. So I am going to render it separately. But I sometime have memory issue in windows system (Running in 2GB RAM).

Shoud I go to use a linux64 version for render with better memory managment ?
Is it ok to render a project created in win32 version of maya 2008 under linux64 ?

Any other advice for rendering such a heavy scene ? I cannot reduce the size because the scene contains lots of details building model.

Thank you.

Frank C.

no theres no problem to render a scene between versions. but know that 64bit wont help you out unless you have more ram. the only thing 64bit does is allow you to use a lot more ram. i think up to 64 GB. i render a lot of high poly/geom scenes so i use a computer with 8 gigs.

the other thing to do is break your scene into multiple render layers so you can render out pieces of geometry and then composite in PS.

i was going to ask same question..
i have the same problem.. my scene has a house model (1.5million polygs) and ..maya 2008 cant render it.. software render and mental ray dont work..
even draft quality.. i tried batch render it but after 3 days i cancelled it . i think maya cant render big scenes if you dont have super computer. my pc has 4gigs of ram and core 2 duo processor.. (vista ultimate 32bit)
also there is another model created with zbrush (5million polygs). it is an obj file and maya cant open it.. also i have lover subd level of same object (1.5million polygs) ..luckily maya opened this one but most of the left side of the model was corupted.. i tried mirror geometry, mirror cut tools but maya had some problems and closed itself..
today i tried to open 5million polyg model with xsi.. it took a few minutes to import the file (1gb) and i rendered scene with mental ray (4000x3000) in about 5 minutes.. i think it is about integration between xsi and mental ray..

so i tried to export my house model as an obj file but maya failed again.. anyway i exported the whole model in 6 parts and imported them to xsi .. i lost almost all material information.. i had lots of phongs anyway i rendered the scene in 2-3 minutes (800x600). so i will learn basics of xsi today and spend my all day with assaigning metarils to my objects again..
i think i will switch to xsi.. it will take me max 1 month.

so i think there is 2 options. use 64 bit os (64 bit tech supports billions times of ram i have now.. but i think vista supports only 128 gigs of ram and linux 64gigs of ram for now) buy gigs of ram and lots of cores.. 100ghz processors ..
or
switch to another program.. ill probbaly switch to xsi..
i dont know 3ds max.. i like maya. i like its design. i like how it looks.. i dont like xsi and 3d max .. they are grey. maya looks like shiny kid but the other programs look like 200 years old grandma..

but maya cant render large scenes. 😞

sorry if it offends anyone

well.. of course it renders if you have really good computer.. . i know what maya can. i know maya can render really huge scenes. i watch movies and play games created with maya.. they are great

i am not a maya expert. i model a sinlge polycube with 5 million polygs. is it ok.. do i need your permision? next time ill ask you .
i dont know if you are Miss Autodesk but i just told what i see. Be honest
sorry if it offends you
