Graph Editor navigation really slow on M1 Max

The graph editor is really choppy and slow on apple M1 Max. It used to be fine. In Maya 2019 its really smooth and fast. So Autodesk made it worse once again. I haven't really updated anymore since Maya 2019, because every time I try to update I have a worse experience working with Maya.  Since Autodesk said Maya 2024 has M1 native support,  I thought I'd give it another try.

Hello,

Could you provide more details.   What release of MacOS are you on?  Do you have the most recent Maya update installed (2024.1)?  Are you editing dense curves in the Graph Editor?  Could you provide a screen capture of what you are seeing?

Thank you,

Kelly

I'm on macOS 13.3.3 and Maya 2024.1 Performance is really bad. Had all sorts of weird problems and crashes. When in working on the same file in Maya 2019, there are zero crashes.

Hello,

I did some testing on mac m1 (macOS 13.5) in Maya 2024.1 and the Graph Editor is working smoothly.  I created and edited animation on a variety of rigs.  I used animation layers, filtered fcurves, added keyframes.  There were no problems.

A couple of questions:  Is cached playback enabled?  Do you use split the viewport into 4 panel view?  What is the specific workflow you are using when these problems occur?  Would you be willing to share your scene file?

Kelly

Hi Here's a video of the slow performance. I have 82 control curves on my character rig. The rig runs at 70 fps at 24 fps. When trying to move around the graph curves of the 82 control curves, then it gets really slow. What is the limit of the graph editor, I don't remember ever having this problem on my intel 10core iMac where I did most of my work in Maya 2019. I'll check Thursday if it runs smoother on that machine.

I worked a lot this last week in Maya 2024.1 and I fortunately didn't had that many crashes but still a lot more than I had in Maya 2019. Weird crashes when I do simple things like duplicating a simple object without history and parts of my interface keep freezing. I switch back and forth between Workspace, after that things unfreeze again. When that bug happens, the channel box, outliner and attribute editor are un-clickable and seem frozen.. Still doesn't feel as a really stable release.

Well.. I guess I wasn't just imagining things after all.. Maya 2024.2 came with a fix for this issue, let's see if it improved?

"Graph editor is slow to respond when manipulating large numbers of keys. MAYA-130162"

I have the same problem on my MacBook m4 pro. Tried 2023, 2024, 2025 versions of Maya. Is there any solution?

this is weird. I have m1 pro and have the same problem. I thought it was a weak gpu. but the m4 pro is much more powerful in this regard... I myself thought about purchasing the m4 max... but judging from your comment there is no point in this. since in m1 the only thing that bothers me is the graph editor...
You can't say that on this site. but in Blender the grapheditor works flawlessly... a huge number of curves and keys move very smoothly.
its Maya 2024.2 - issue is here... nothing is fixed

It is not fixed in Maya 2025, the graph editor is once again super slow sluggish. I cant work this way!

Great, hopefully it will get fixed asap, I can hardly animate like this. The problem occurs pretty fast, when you select more than 40 control curves of a character rig its already starting to lag and you can’t zoom in and out or move keys around etc

I was also asked by autodesk to upload my rig of the video I’d posted, but it happens with every rig I animate, it’s not the rig, it’s the amount of curves in the graph editor. It can’t handle more than a X amount of curves. And it happens pretty quickly. It should at least be able to handle the amount of curves of a professional character rig. 2000-4000 curves

yes!! I load a video with cubes.... it's not rig problem. it's problem only with drawing a curves in graph editor.
maybe its same problem with nurbs curves in viewport if they have width more than 1. viewport with curves start to be very slow...

@brentmcHello!
Could you please share any updates regarding the graph editor issue? I’ve noticed that the last two updates for Maya 2026 still show the same behavior.

Hi,

Unfortunately, nothing to report.

OpenGL performance is worse on Apple Silicon and has been deprecated but Maya still relies on it.
