Getting MASH to use multiple color sets to control distribution

scattering some trees using mash and redshift proxies... when i create a mash network and distribute on a mesh... if the mesh has a color set (color at vertices) then it will scatter the trees where the color is white, and not where it's black... so far so good
but now i want another mash network scattering bushes on the same emitter/mesh but i want to use a DIFFERENT color at vertices property to mask the distribution
if i add a new color set to the ground, and paint a new distribution mask, the older mash network picks up this new property set, rather than keeping the old one...
where do you physcally connect/control the color set that's being used by mash to control distribution??
thanks
