FBX export error in Maya 2016 sp2

I have installed Maya sp2.

In Maya 2016 sp1 I export fbx perfectly, now when I load the FBX in Unity or other software I have an error: the fbx file is corrupted.

Others have had this issue?

Hello RICCARDORUSSI9039,

There was a change in the file format for FBX 2016, and if Unity did not update their importer yet, then this could cause problems.

You can try the following: When you go to export your fbx file from Maya, go into the FBX options, in the Advanced section, there is a drop down menu to change the FBX version. Choose 2015 and see if this helps.

Regards,
Carlos

I have installed new FBX Review 1.3.0.0 and now I can load the FBX file.
In Unity (vers. 5.1.2f1), the problem remained.
I also tried to export a simple cube to FBX 2015/2014, then with FBX 2013 (Binary and ASCII), but I always have the same problem.

Unity message:
“ImportFBX Errors:
Couldn't import file /cubofbx.fbx.
File is corrupted (or invalid)”

I would understand if it is a general problem of Maya 2016 SP2 (it seems strange that the game exporter has not been tested in Unity...)
Can I reinstall the 2016 sp1?

If you are able to import your file into FBX Review, I will assume you can also import it into Maya as well.  This would mean that the FBX file itself is ok.

We think the problem is on the Unity importer side. We can't test other packages (i.e. Unity, Unreal) because we have no control over their developement. It is up to the individual apps to update their software.

The game exporter is tested in a way that we make sure that FBX files are exported correctly. If they can be imported back into Autodesk products (i.e. Maya, FBX Review, Stingray), then we consider it working.

The good news is that you can revert back to SP1 quite easily.  Go into Control Panel, and go into Uninstall a Program, on the left hand column, choose View Installed Updates.  There you will see the SP2 update, if you uninstall this, you will revert back to SP1.

I suggest you start a post in the Unity forums to see when and if they will update their importer.

Hello again,

There is one other thing you can try.

Export the cube, but this time do an File>Export Selected instead of using the game exporter.  Switch the format to 2014/2015 again in the options before you Export.

Let us know your result.

Carlos

Ok, we have in fact discovered a bug with the Game Exporter in SP2.

In the main interface of the Game Exporter, you can now change the FBX Version and File Type under the Settings Section. These changes are not being fed into the exported file.

There is an easy workaround.  Click the gear icon that is located right next to the File Type menu item and edit the Version and Type via these advanced settings.  The setting will now be exported correctly.

However, the 2016 file format is not supported by Unity so it is normal (for now). So, until Unity updates their importer, you must export your files with the 2014/2015 file format.

Regars,

Carlos
