ctrl-click to select multiple items in outliner not working maya 2016

Using maya 2016 SP6 for mac with 2-button mouse tracking set in preferences since I'm using a trackpad.

Selecting multiple (non-contiguous) items with ctrl+click or cmd+click works as expected with 3-button mode set.

Selecting multiple (contiguous) items with shift+click works as expected.

Selecting multiple items with ctrl+click or cmd+click DOES NOT work with 2-button tracking set.

This worked fine in previous versions of maya (e.g. maya 2014).

This is a serious impediment to my workflow and happens constantly - I need to select things in the outliner every few seconds to work.

I have a 3-button mouse, but if I set it to 2-button tracking I'm able to use command+rmb to select non-contiguous items in the outliner. Have you tried that?

Ah! That works and helps a lot - thank you.

I wonder, is that a bug or by design? No other list control I've ever used works like that.

What is interesting is, I have Maya 2014, 2015, and 2016 on the Mac I'm using...and in 2-button mode I can only select multiple non-contiguous items with command+RMB. (I'm running El Capitan, which BTW is not supported for Maya yet.)

I use control + option + command for Maya 2020
