Can't export character animation to a functional USD

I need to export a short character animation to a USD file so it can then be converted to a usdz for use in AR. I did this same process a few months ago and had no trouble getting a USD file that was about 6 MB then using Apple Reality Converter to convert it to USDZ. Now I'm having trouble even getting a file to export successfully, and when it doesn't error out, the file is somewhere between 3 and 4 GB! This seems to be when I set skeletons and skin clusters to none, and when I set them to "only under SkelRoots" that's when it completely fails to export at all. Note everything is parented under a "SkelRoot" group in my scene already.
Any help would be much appreciated, I've been bashing my head against this for nearly 4 hours now trying all the different settings in the USD exporter. I even went back to the orginal file from a couple months ago that I had success with and have the exact same issues now.
