Can't change wireframe color on an object

I'm trying to use the method where I select an object, go to Display > Wireframe Color, and then change the color in there to either "default" or some other color as defined within that menu. However, no matter what I select, I cannot change the color of the wireframe of my meshes. I've tried selecting Default, I've tried selecting one of the swatches, and I've tried just setting it to black in the RGB options.

Is there something else that controls the wireframe of objects that is preventing me from changing it?

Put it in a layer and assign it a color to the layer.

There are a few ways to do this, one of the easiest is to create a standard material, apply it to your object, then use the object color (next to the object name above the modifier list, or the "Create" tab also has an object name and color field.) Your object will retain the color of the material, and the wire frame will inherit the object color.
