Can't create Masks/ptx for x Gen (Maya 2022), Catalina OSX

I've been learning the basics of Xgen though have hit a brick wall because whenever I try to create a mask/ texture I get a file path error. Even though I'm naming everything properly and have set my project correctly I always get this error.

// Error: XGen: Searched path includes: /Users/paul/Desktop/2021_personal_projects/xgen2/xgen/collections/xgentest_collection/HAIR_DESC/paintmaps/dens_MASK/pSphere1.ptx (Part of path doesn't exist)

/Applications/Autodesk/maya2022/plug-ins/xgen/presets/Hair_DESC/paintmaps/DENS_mask/hairball_geo.ptx (Part of path doesn't exist)

when I do check the folder in question it looks like this: (screenshot attached)
