Will this be okay for animation...?

I'm currently following a book on Maya and I've recently finished retopologising my mesh and I've transferred my sculpt's details across in Mudbox. However, judging from the book, this has been done to later make a Normal or Displacement map. I believe though, that the author continues to use the model with the transferred details in Maya and for rigging and animating. What I'm confused about though, is transferring all those details to my retopologised mesh has increased the geometry and vertice count again. At the moment, it's sitting around 2650626 vertices. Is this fine for deformation and animation?
