Replacing a reference does not reflect in the outliner?

I have a fully rigged character, and then made a reference of that file so that I could do my animations. I realized that my naming of the original was a bit odd, and made it difficult for me to find it later. Therefore, I decided to replace the reference with a newly saved file, based on that original, but named something easier for me to work with.

With that said, the reference still shows the old, original file's name in the outliner, so it appears as though it is still referencing the original, even though it may not be?

Is this normal? Is there a way to change the naming in the outliner to reflect the new referenced file, or should I leave it alone?

reference editor.

there is the namespace line and a resolved name, you can type a new name into it.

This is not true, the "RN" object in the outliner does not change, no matter what you change. It really bugs me. I cant find any answer to this?

I feel like most ppl don't really interact with the RN node directly,

 However, if you really do want to rename it.

You can:

  1. Save the file as ascii ..
  2. Then in a text editor. rename the RN node in the reference command lines at the to of the file.  ( make sure to change all occurances)

or you can:

  1. select the RN node and run  lockNode -lock 0;  *(or -l for short ) ( this will unlock the node)
  2. Rename the RN node using any of the multiple ways to rename in Maya *( I recommend keeping the _RN as part of the name )
  3. and I would recommend, re-locking the node after using lockNode -l 1 ;

and just be aware that namespace or prefix are different from the name of the RN node itself.
