I imported skin weights into a versioned file and it affected the previous files

So I'm working on a commission piece and I needed to adjust the joint orientation of a few joints for the rig to work. I already weight painted so I decided to version up my file, go to deformer menu, export weights, unbind skin, adjust the joints accordingly, rebind skin, and import weights, again from the deformer menu. The result was horrible so I thought, no big deal, this is why I versioned up. I didn't save, just exited it out and opened up the previous file. However, that file now has the same wonky weights. I know I didn't save the files because both were saves last at 3:00 and 3:08 and I didnt think to open up and try this meathod until five.

What could possibly be causing this and is there any fix? I'm terrified to open up more previous versions in case this is irriversable.

If anyone ever has this problem, I removed the preference folder and of course the problem is gone now.
