Hi!

Render out an image sequence (Batch Render or Render Sequence), import this sequence in a video application and render out a compressed movie file.

Hi!

The possible output formats are renderer and OS dependent, but yes, this is the usable / preferred method.

Even if a 3d application or renderer can render out movie file formats, it's not recommended for several reasons.

For a rough preview in Maya you could use Playblast.

remember if importing to after in your timeline it will be shorter by default

right click on the imported image sequence and click on interpret footage then change it from the default 30 to 24 (or whatever you're using)

you will now be able to stretch it in your timeline to the correct length of time

What video editor should I use to import? And how can I import it?
