Disappearing mesh after auto skin?

I got this reaally weird bug. So I used the quick rig tool, everything goes well until I go to the auto GVB skinning process and save it in maya 2019 as .ma. When I open it up again, all of the mesh I rig disappear, and the other mesh (a gun) that is not rigged at all somehow lost all the materials (appeared green). Now this is where it gets weird, I tried to use 2017 maya version, open up my pre-skinned mesh and skin it there. I saved it on maya 2017 as .ma the mesh doesn't disappear and the other mesh retains the material. Then I tried to open it on maya 2019 it was fine, BUT when I saved it as .ma in 2019 the hair mesh got stretched out. I can easily just use maya 2017 for this but this is very frustrating bug I have no clue what's going on. I use student version
