Animating Via Time Editor not Equivalent to Classic Animating

The time editor has been a big help organizing many clips I need to move around.
I now need to add more detail to some animation, so I created an additive layer on my clip.
But I immediately am noticing the downfalls. Though my layer is selected and "Set as keyable layer" is clicked, keying works with moving the object and hitting S. This is not ideal, as my animation workflow is more than this.
Specifically what will not work:
Middle-click dragging a key on the timeline and hitting S. I see the keys on the timeline, but when I go drag out the one I want to a later frame and hit S, it says "No Key Set. Set a layer on a clip or mute the Time Editor to set keys.".
In the graph editor, I see the keys I want to copy to a later frame. I select those keys, move to a later frame and try pasting/ But the keys all are set to a value of 0.
This is a big setback. I hope I'm just doing something wrong, or this can be patched.
