I have had this exact same from for years. I believe that it started with Maya 2017 SP1 and is still there with SP4, running on Windows 10 Professional. I have the "Autodesk hardware compatibility guide" and have installed the recommended drivers for each version of software and for the specific graphics card in the system. I have two graphics cards that I have tried in the system. Here are my findings, after many days of lost hours and troubleshooting.
1. Fault occurs at random. It appears to be triggered by attempting to move a nurbs curve on the the screen when there is more than one viewpanel open.
2. The fault occurs with Quadro K4200 with certified driver.
3. The fault occurs with GeForce 1070 with certified driver.
4. The fault occurs with both cards with the most up-to-date driver 391.03.
5. At the time of the fault, neither the GPU and PC memory is anywhere near full.
When the fault occurs, the output panel just repeats the OpenCL message over and over, leaving the GUI non-responsive. The scene cannot be saved and you have to kill the Maya process with the Windows task manager.
The user is then very cross as all their work leading up to this incident is lost!
It is too easy to blame nVidia for this and say that it is impossible to test every card/system combination, when in fact you simply need to write code that behaves correctly when a GPU exception occurs. Maya clearly knows that there is a problem as it would not be able to print out that error message otherwise.
I have also used Redshift renderer on the same system for a year now and it has never had a problem with "nVidia drivers". It is rock solid. Perhaps your developers should talk to those experts for advice on writing solid code suitable for GPUs.
I strongly suggest that this be logged and tracked as a serious "software fault" and perhaps we will see a solution some time before Maya 2019 is released!
Bernie.
