OpenCL Error: Unknown error waiting for idle on GeForce GTX 1070 (Device 0).

Maya 2018

Windows 10

32 GB RAM

GeForce GTX 1070

Maya 2018 will freeze after moving the controls on a rig. The only way to shut it down is through the Task Manager. I'm not sure what is triggering it - the issue occurs sporadically. Maya will hitch after I adjust the rig, then freeze a minute later. The Output Window displays the line: OpenCL Error: Unknown error waiting for idle on GeForce GTX 1070 (Device 0).

I updated the drivers for the GeForce GTX 1070 but the issue still occurs. I have already tried deleting the preference folder, and I tried turning off OpenCL in the environment file. Any ideas? Thanks for your time.

Hi @Anonymous and welcome to the community!

When you get a chance, can you please zip and attach the scene file here or via dropbox/google drive or another file sharing program so I can take a look at it?

Hi Sean,

Thank you for the quick reply. The scene is attached. Just a heads up, I find that sometimes it takes hours before Maya freezes. Also, the original file uses a referenced rig, but I've imported it into the attached file so that you can use it. Thanks again for checking this out.

Hi @Anonymous

Thanks for attaching the scene file!

I didn't notice any problems right away and after a bit of testing but the issue is most likely with your GPU.

You said you updated your GPU drivers but in this case that might not actually solve the problem.

Our officially supported driver for the 1070 is 388.43. Can you please check to see if that is your current driver version?

If it's not, please uninstall that driver and you can download version 388.43 here!

Please let me know if this helps or if you need any more assistance!

Hey Sean,

Thanks for taking a look. I was running the 390.77 driver, but I rolled back to the 388.43 driver as per your recommendation. I've been using it for a couple hours so far and I haven't encountered the freezing issue, which is really good news. However, I'm going to wait a bit longer before saying it's been solved just in case it snags later. Thanks again for all of your help!

Well, I've been working with this file all day and it hasn't frozen once. 🙂 Thanks again for all of your help, Sean. (I wonder why the latest GeForce 1070 driver - as of this writing - causes Maya to freeze?) Rolling back the driver seems to have worked. Thanks for figuring it out!

Hi @Anonymous

It's kind of an odd thing with how driver changes can affect software. Generally you don't see many issues but there are times where even the smallest of changes can affect a program. It's not necessarily anyone's fault since its too time consuming to test every program for every bug.

That said, thats why we have out certified driver version so that if at any point an issue occurs because of a new drive our users can simply roll back to the old one and continue to work normally!

I have had this exact same from for years.  I believe that it started with Maya 2017 SP1 and is still there with SP4, running on Windows 10 Professional.  I have the "Autodesk hardware compatibility guide" and have installed the recommended drivers for each version of software and for the specific graphics card in the system.  I have two graphics cards that I have tried in the system.  Here are my findings, after many days of lost hours and troubleshooting.

1.  Fault occurs at random.  It appears to be triggered by attempting to move a nurbs curve on the the screen when there is more than one viewpanel open.

2.  The fault occurs with Quadro K4200 with certified driver.

3.  The fault occurs with GeForce 1070 with certified driver.

4.  The fault occurs with both cards with the most up-to-date driver 391.03.

5.  At the time of the fault, neither the GPU and PC memory is anywhere near full.

When the fault occurs, the output panel just repeats the OpenCL message over and over, leaving the GUI non-responsive.  The scene cannot be saved and you have to kill the Maya process with the Windows task manager.

The user is then very cross as all their work leading up to this incident is lost!

It is too easy to blame nVidia for this and say that it is impossible to test every card/system combination, when in fact you simply need to write code that behaves correctly when a GPU exception occurs.  Maya clearly knows that there is a problem as it would not be able to print out that error message otherwise.

I have also used Redshift renderer on the same system for a year now and it has never had a problem with "nVidia drivers".  It is rock solid.  Perhaps your developers should talk to those experts for advice on writing solid code suitable for GPUs.

I strongly suggest that this be logged and tracked as a serious "software fault" and perhaps we will see a solution some time before Maya 2019 is released!

Bernie.

Same here:

GTX 1070 Ti 32GB RAM

Maya freezes during working on controllers. Pisses me off big time. Going to downgrade the drivers. praying it'll help. Just lost a solid hour of work. Since Maya isn't actually crashing (just stops responding on anything) it won't attempt to save the scene...

The problem i caused by GPU override in preferences > settings > animation and it's not specific to 1070 and occurs on every driver I've tested so far. You have to tick of GPU override but in my case it slows playback way down.
