Maya 2017 Mash simple crowd setup possible?

Hi all!

Is there any way to use Mash Flight node as a simple crowd simulation?

All i need is 20-30 small simple characters running along side with a few bigger ones and avoiding them (like so https://youtu.be/MVbeoSPqRs4?t=89).

I don't need any advanced features, just scattered on a landscape geometry alembics running in a direction avoiding some other alembics).

I found this tutorial https://vimeo.com/98438069 but it seems to work with previous versions of Maya and it gives somewhat unpredictable result via flight node

Or maybe i need something different (don't have massive or golaem or anything like those plugins).

Hello,
In Maya a simple crowd with Mash is possible.
The complexity of the setup depends mostly on what you want to do.
For the scene like in your video example, I would suggest to use a crowd simulator.
Mash is not intended for high-end complex scenes.
Being smart though, it is possible to cheat in order to have a similar effetc.
I would avoid the flight node, it is not easy to control. You should think of not considering obstacle avoidance or to fake it.
In the example Scene I attached, I used a simple setup by using a set of curves to define different paths for the crowd.  This way you can shape your curves as you want and leave the space in the center for the big guy.
I attached a set of planes to the curves via Mash, there are the planes where all the man will be.
I used those planes because I can deform the resulting repro mesh to match the shape of the hills.
Then I created a new Mash setup with the man animation and distributed the men to the planes using the "mesh"
method, in the Distribute node.
The resulting quality depends on the quality of the source animations.
Cheers
D
