not sure what you mean by "basic settings"
but after your draw with a brush, open up the attribute editor, and look at all the settings for the "brush" and you'll see how it's created, There are a lot of settings, but they all build off each other. so there isn't much difference
between twigs, branches, stems, and leaves. they all have basically the same attributes. you just change them differently.
if you open up "tubes" and check under "growth" you'll see the different "branching" you can create.
best thing to do, is to look at something simple, like sunflower. and open up all the tabs to see how it was created, and then check something like woodChess, and see how it was created.

if you use "help" for brushes. you'll get an idea of the possible channels for it

however , with all that said, maybe whatever it is you need to do might be easier to accomplish with MASH or xgen
