IK handle wrong orientation and behaviour.

Hello, I am new to rigging in Maya. I am trying to rig a character that I modeled some time back and have been having problems with the IK handle placement. It keeps rotating in the wrong axis. I have attached the some screen shots below. Do you know what I am doing wrong. I think I might be making a mistake with the rotation of the joints. As you can see in the image the IK handle is pointing in the wrong direction. I double checked the joint rotation to see if they all are following the same axis. I tried freezing transforms and only rotating the joints using the joint orient values and not the rotate values, both are having the same result. I tried using the set preferred joints option but that also shifts the joints and adds value the the rotation fields which just keeps resetting after I freeze the transformations. Is there any solution to get the IK handle to follow the orientation of the joints ?
Thanks.IKrig.pngIKrig2.pngIKrig3.pngIKrig4.png

there are a few ways to set your preferred angle for IK handles.

(preferred angle is the way that the ikHandle will try and solve the bend of the joints)

1 way is to give a small bend to the joints when creating

2 way is to build straight and then set the preferred angle by rotating the joint (1 in axis only!), and then set preferred angle

i go over some of this in this tutorial --> https://youtu.be/Y07HK1bn6MQ
