Human IK Can't Define Controls

Hi everyone,

I am very new to animating/rigging in Maya. We have an assignment in school where we have to assign a rig's joints/controllers to the human IK function in Maya. Everything goes well up until I have to define the controls using the "create custom rig mapping" button. My teacher's Custom Rig tab has spheres where the joints are but mine doesn't, even though I am following along very closely. The only advice I received or found online was to update Maya or to restart the project. I'm currently using the most current version of Maya and I've restarted numerous times, it's the same result every time. He is currently using 2018 Maya and mine is 2023, could this possibly have something to do with it? I hope everything I said makes sense, I'm a flash animator so a lot of this is very foreign to me! Thank you in advance!

hi Catherine,

Your custom rig is only showing the FK controls.  IK controls are missing.  With only an image, it's hard for me to know what happened.  Can you outline the steps you did to get here?  Did you start with a file?  Some more details would be helpful.

It's probably due to using different CustomRigControlConfig.xml in the two versions of Maya, or your teacher has loaded a separate one.

There's some discussions about customizing the default configs in these two threads, but in the end the visual look of the config shouldn't affect the mapping, as long as you are able to map the controls you want it should work.

Hope this helps!

This should help you https://www.riggingdojo.com/2019/02/08/learn-maya-hik-custom-rig-motion-capture-retargeting-and-anim...

Make sure you define the skeleton first in the definition tab then in the custom controls tab it will allow you to map what custom rig control is driving the bones you mapped in the definition.
