Hi!

There isn't really a strict rule to joint orientation and depending on how your contols are set up there shouldn't really be much of a difference.

Most riggers use the rule of thumb to orient the joints in a way that the main axis matches the closest world axis (y for spine, legs, head etc, x for arms and wings, z for tails or anything else sticking out back or front). Also having the secondary axis oriented in a way that positive values will lift the limb up away from the ground so positive secondary axis orientation on the left side of the model and negative secondary axis orientation on the right side (from the models perspective), also known as behaviourally mirrored.

For example shoulder orientations:

Left: Primary axis X, Secondary Axis Y, Secondary Axis World Orient Y+

Right: Primary axis X, Secondary Axis Y, Secondary Axis World Orient Y-

Hips orientations:

Left: Primary axis Y, Secondary Axis Z, Secondary Axis World Orient X+

Right: Primary axis Y, Secondary Axis Z, Secondary Axis World Orient X-

But again, this is a rule of thumb, there are a ton of rigs out there that have different joint orientations and work perfectly fine as well. I personally have found this to work the best in most cases.

I hope it helps!
