How to move object after parent constraining it

I was wondering when applying a constraint on an object, ex a parent constraint, does it prevent the transformation channels from being modified so that you can't transform it directly? And if I wanted to use a parent constraint on a object and still be able to transform that object, would I have to use a proxy object? Basically applying the constraint on a proxy object, and doing the normal parenting of the object in question to the proxy object?

Basically   , yes, constraints take over the channels of an object and control them..

If you key that object, it will override the  constraint and you can blend between the two..

but if you want extra control.

parent the object to itself. then parent constraint to that new group..

The group above will follow your constraint, and  you can still animate the object itself
